“Honestly, she treated that dog better than me!”
We once heard that line from a friend, someone we like very much, but who never owned a dog in his life. He has allergies, you see.
Everyone laughed when he talked about his ex-girlfriend and her pug but inside a small voice in us cried out: “Of course she treated him better. He’s her fur baby. You were a mere boyfriend!”
In some respect that probably was a little self-indulgent on our part but it also rang with a smidgeon of truth. She lived with that dog, had him since he was a puppy, nursed him when he was ill, and she may still be living with him until this very day!
And – well – where is her boyfriend? Gone.
