Peter Dinklage is Urging ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans to Stop Buying Direwolf Huskies

Celebrity endorsements are not unusual and can often be thought of as pandering but this time we are listening. A good human being, as well as having a fur child of his own, actor Peter Dinklage urges the following:

“Please, to all of Game of Thrones‘ many wonderful fans, we understand that due to the dire-wolves’ huge popularity, many folks are going out and buying huskies. Not only does this hurt all the deserving homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are also reporting that many of these huskies are being abandoned as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding their needs.
Please, please, if you’re going to bring a dog into your family, make sure that you’re prepared for such a tremendous responsibility and remember to always, ALWAYS, adopt from a shelter.”

While we are sure most families have good intentions, love the dog breed, and want to make it work, huskies can be complicated dogs. Yes, they are beautiful, reminding us of the majestic ancient dire wolf, but they also can be overly energetic and athletic!

They need room to run and their thick double coat constantly needs brushing and grooming. Also, Huskies are more prone to an eye inflammation, known as uveitis, than most other breeds.

If you can look past these character traits and potential problems and just love your “dire husky” for what it is this may be the pooch for you. However, if you are not willing to take the time with this gorgeous breed we suggest you look elsewhere! For more on this topic head to The Dogington Post.
