Three Flat Faced Pooches Who Don’t Fare Well in the Heat and Why This is the Case

When we needed to take a flight with our dog we noted something interesting in the warning and instruction online page. Specifically about dogs that were accepted on the plane in their cargo hold. It said very plainly that brachycephalic dogs or flat faced dogs were not allowed. Luckily, our own pooch was not of that type but it got us to wondering how in the world those people supposed to fly their pets into a new state if they were not allowed to fly them? A road trip?

Anyway, we then began to wonder what it was about a flat-faced dog that made them so “hands off” for air flight. We were told that often dogs with flat faces had breathing restrictions and problems and, when allowed, it had come back to bite the airline. Not literally, of course, but we could guess there must have been illness or even death!

We were also told that even though the cargo hold was temperature regulated it could get warm in there and brachycephalic dogs did not do well because of that. In a way, that did make sense but I had to think about all of those thick coated dogs like huskies and shepherds that had fur to spare. How could they manage in the heat? Surprising well, as it turns out! We were told their think coats often insulate them from the worst of the summer heat, keeping them cooler! Fascinating!

With this in mind, go on over to the next page and read-up on three breeds of dog that really do not fare well in the heat!
