With These 6 Tips, Fido Can Help You Go ‘Green!’

So what can you do to help? Here are six tips to become a more eco-friendly pet owner!

Buy in Bulk

The next time you go to the store to buy some food for your furry buddy, buy in bulk. You’ll be: – Using less plastic packaging and cardboard boxes, which means less waste that’ll end up in landfills – Going less frequent trips to the store back and forth, meaning less car usage.

Reuse

Use a reusable bag the next time you go to the pet store or veterinarian. Reuse some good old socks or a tennis ball at your disposal as a toy for your dog to play with instead of getting them a plastic toy only to throw it away after a while and cause harm to the environment. Use a towel or rag to clean up after your dog that you can later on wash and reuse instead of using a paper towel one time and then throwing it away only to end up being thrown in some landfill.

Organic Dog Food

Save agricultural land, energy resources used to raise meat found in commercial dog food. Meat found in natural and organic dog food is: barely processed, raised sustainably, free of added hormones, preservatives, antibiotics, checmicals, artificial ingredients and pesticides.

Scoop That Poop

Rule of thumb: Pick up your dog’s poop no matter where or when. Use biodegradable bags to pick up your dog’s poop instead of oh-so-common plastic bags that go to landfills, take 100’s of years to decompose and lead to serious pond and lake contamination as well as up to 65 diseases in other animals and humans. Meanwhile, biodegradable dog poop bags are long gone in a matter of a few months.

Adopt from a Shelter

Around 50% of animals that arrive in U.S. shelters end up being euthanized due to lack of space and adopters. This makes for around 8000 animals killed every day. Adopt a dog to help decrease the shelter/rescues usage of resources, decrease the need to buy products like dog food, toys, beds and crates, and save the life of one puppy by opening up space for another rescue that would have otherwise been euthanized.

Less Driving, More Walking

Instead of driving to the dog park just so you could walk Fido around, try searching for a dog park nearby and within walking distance from your house. This will save you gas and money, not to mention saving the earth from your car’s carbon dioxide.

These are all little changes that can make a huge difference in the bigger picture. Start small, and it will become second nature to you! Your puppy, your home, and your planet will thank you. For more tips on how to go “green” with your dog, take a look at The Dogington Post!
