Once the winter sets in, it can be hard for you and your pup to stick to a regular workout routine. Dr. Alison Tani from DogVacay shares some some lazy ways you can help your pup get back into shape below.

1. Swap Out Treats for a Healthier Alternative

Try swapping out their treats for veggies such as carrots, green beans, and celery; these make great low calorie treats and they’ll still make your pet feel full.

2. Check Portion Control

The key to most weight problems is calorie control. Have your vet help you figure out if you’re giving your pup the recommended amount according to their breed, weight, and age.

3. Play “Treat Toss”

For those days neither of you feels like going outside, try tossing a couple pieces of kibble or a couple of treats across the room. Repeat this a few times to get their heart rates up.

4. Try Switching Up Your Pup’s Food

Foods labeled “weight loss” or “light” typically have more fiber and a lower calorie count; they’re designed to help your pup maintain a healthy weight.

5. Put Your Dog on a Feeding Schedule

Try getting your dog on a routine feeding schedule once in the morning and once at night. This way you know exactly how much your pet is consuming and it’ll prevent them from eating too much out of boredom.

As you learn new ways to keep your doggy in shape, it's important to remember to stay active with your pup throughout the year. This will ensure a long and happy life for you and your pet.

We all know how great it is to lay under a blanket with our dogs and curl up for some snuggle time, but these habits can get your doggy into a major lazy zone. Get yourselves out of this rut as soon as possible.
