There are a couple different notions as to what happens when a dog experiences a human mom who is pregnant. We know dogs are smart, but the fact that most know when something is going on with their human is mind-boggling. We can only imagine what is going on in their minds but check out below to see those theories:
One theory has to do with a dog’s super sense of smell. Women who are pregnant have rapidly changing hormones and their usual scent may change. As dogs use their noses and scents to understand their world, it’s no wonder that if their favorite person’s scent changes suddenly, they are going to pick up on these changes.
Another theory suggests it has more to do with a dog noticing a change in their pregnant mama’s routines and emotions. While pregnant, women are more likely to experience changes in mood, posture, and routine (like extra potty breaks). Pups are creatures of habit and small changes in their daily routine are guaranteed to be noticed.
While there still needs to be a learning curve for your fur child, quelling that confusion in your pup, he might not be as clueless as we think. That belly bump turning into a new human baby might make perfect sense to him.
Just train Fido and meet his emotional needs and things should be fine. Before you know it the baby will be born and all your children will become fast friends!
