Doggie Pet Insurance: Is it Life Saving or a Rip Off?

mom and Yorkie

Dog insurance is a big decision, but so is getting a dog. Are you aware just how expensive a vet visit, let alone how much a surgery may cost? If your dog's life depends on it and you don't have a lot of money saved up, getting pet insurance might be a good option for you. Still, it's important to be informed before you sign up. Here's more about pet insurance and what you can expect from it:

So what is it?

Most policies have limits on what they cover and many reimburse you for money spent vs. paying the vet directly.

Why does this even matter?

According to the ASPCA, the average yearly cost of a dog is $1,000 – $2,000. This does not include an emergency vet visit. Alternatively, the yearly cost of Pet Insurance can range from $300 – $500.

So is pet insurance the answer?

Buying pet insurance is both an economic and emotional decision that needs to be based on your personal financial situation and what you’re willing to pay for peace of mind. If you can have an emergency fund of $3,000-$5,000 you can set aside then you are probably good to go. The right policy can be a big asset to the health of your dog.

Purchasing health insurance was a wise decision for me, considering there have been many unexpected vet visits for my Morkie. Plus, pet insurance gives me a piece of mind heaven forbid should anything serious happen to my fur baby. It's up to you to decide what's best for your pooch, but take some time to seriously think about pet insurance and how it may benefit you.
